Andy Dumas – a report

Unusually for me I did what I said I would and went searching for the mythical Andy Dumas. Fortunately he turned out to be the owner of Poor Boys so I was able to get a sense of the man as well as well and drunk, ah, the things I have to do as an “ace reporter”.

Andy Dumas turned out to be every bit as good as his pamphlet, in fact a lot better. He was originally an American born in Dallas, Texas and to be honest it’s worth spending and evening at his bar just listening to his stories from that period of his life.

As a potential councilor he was a complete revelation; encyclopedic knowledge of Hastings combined with common sense, the classic American “can do” attitude and a sense of humor, whats not to like?

I spent a couple of hours at Poor Boys talking to him and others around the bar (its that  sort of place) and not once was he evasive or in any way like the classic politician we have come to know and loath in this country.

He is taking on Godfrey Daniels in the election. I have met Godfrey once, my abiding memory of that occasion was, after hearing my opinion that we should strengthen democracy by having many more referendums he said, with the tone of a kindly school master, “Steve, that would be too expensive”. Within a short period of time his party was spending billions “bringing democracy to Iraq” against the obvious wishes of the majority of his fellow citizens. He was a nice man but that remark alone summons up the patrician attitude of the rulers who always know best.

Back to Andy, hes got my vote and I suggest if you’re interested in voting, and you should be, you get down to Poor Boys and check him out in the flesh – democracy and drinking, you know it makes sense!

I might try and meet Mr Dumas…

A slightly suspicious thing is that there are no ways to contact Andy Dumas except through a postal address and his blog/website does not allow comments. I might waddle down Poor Boys, where I think he hangs out, he might even own it, and try for a few words to ascertain the cut of his gib. If I do I will report back. Should I wear a trilby with “press” on it?

Andy Dumas, he’s my man…

I picked up this pamphlet from the hall the last night whilst heading out in search for Nivana through wine. I initially thought it was the BNP or some such. For some reason I decided to read it. I had read Godfrey Daniels pamphlet which, to be honest, just insulted my intelligence; I think asinine statements saying you want “better” for Hastings are just a waste of the trees they are printed on. As if anyone would say they wanted to make things worse!

Anyway, this pamphlet turned out to be for an independent candidate Andy Dumas and what a revelation it was. Masses of common sense mixed with what appears to be a genuine desire to listen AND be persuaded. Add to that what looks suspiciously like a sense of humor and he’d got my vote right away.

I might try to see if I can catch him speaking somewere… This is his website: www.thepbflyer.blogspot.com

The motorcycle as sailing clipper.

A word to the wise brought to you by a completly fictional parable in which a man with a extra large windscreen on his BMW touring bike gets into a race with a very nice looking custom Vaxhall on the M11. The mistake this completely fictional character made was trying to raise his windscreen at 110 mph. This fictional man now has a dent in his bank account.

Naturally, being a completly made up story, he won the race!

Your new car, what you should know.

To save you reading the rest of this here is the main point; if, as seems likely, there is a major breakthrough in battery technology in the next couple of years any car bought now is going to have a resale value in four years measured in  peanuts.

Research into improved batteries is now a hot item, after years of little activity on this front money is pouring into the field and reported breakthroughs happening almost weekly from Stanfords silicon nanowire lithium ion ba to battery to St Andrews air fueled battery not forgetting the mysterious EEStor super capacitor. This all suggests that radical improvements are in the offing and that cars with ranges of 300 miles plus are possible and likely.

Now, those who don’t know me might expect a long discourse on how great this might be from the point of climate change, I’m afraid not, what does excite me is the over whelming fun that electric vehicles will bring. The main thing to notice is that an electric motor that can drive a car briskly is about the size of a melon. It requires little cooling, has no exhaust, few moving parts and has almost no vibration. Compare that to a current car; a huge engine consisting of hundreds of moving parts shaking the car to an early grave. Add to this nightmare regular servicing, parts that require replacement, especially the exhaust, and you begin to wonder why anyone would ever buy such a millstone!

Take the internal combustion engine out of the car and the the possibilty emerges of cars that could be built to last decades, cheaper to run (even with the higher taxes required to compensate for the lack of petrol tax), be much simpler to manufacture opening up car manufacturing to a much greater range of suppliers.

But it’s not just about the utilitarian aspect of car transport that could improve, the fashion aspect could leap forward, imagine a basic car chassis that could have the body work replaced as whim took you, imagine the huge varity of body shapes that could appear released from the tyranny of huge engine/exhaust/liquid fuel tank.

Now back to my original point; if the electric revolution happens the resale value of your car will disappear. To put it bluntly; people buying a new car now are taking a gamble AGAINST a scientific and production technology breakthrough in batteries. I wish you luck with that one!

This afternoon I’ve been listening to Kim…

The suns up, it’s Friday afternoon before a bank holiday week-end so naturally it’s sloping off from work time.

After interminable delays from Sky (yes sir, just a couple of days) Kims broardband is in so it’s off to the new Castle Thrower to lounge about, sorry, that should read “set up his computer”.

This took minutes so it was into the deep leather chair to listen to the world according to Kim. This involves string of conciousness wisdom without the wisdom.  Mind you perhaps it’s just jealosy on my part as his new found single status has lead to a queue forming by his bed when all I seem to get by mine is wood lice.

Anyway here is a picture of our hard working hero…

Many of you will be removing small axes from your heads…

Last night was the quiz. Most had fun and it was a good turn out. Team Steve & John (me and John Evans have been asked to do it every fortnight, I will come to that later.

Kim Throwers team came a valiant last with Kim even getting the give-away question of the night wrong (when was the battle of Hastings?). Knowing me he thought it was a trick question, it wasn’t…

A couple of things soured it for me; I think I got a bit of “I’m the boss” attitude from the land-ladies husband (I had just screwed up slightly on the scoring) and Sheila (who runs the quiz) is a “micro manager”. The first one is easy, I’m my boss, so b***** ***, take it or leave it.

The second is more subtle and raises the reason I all most certainly won’t be doing regularly, at least at the Cinque Ports, Shelia is doing it to raise a bit of money for charity and have a fun night at the pub where she is a regular and with this in mind everything is tailored for the pubs current clientèle. This is fine and admirable, but, not what I’m interested in. I suppose I always take things too seriously but I would have two aims; get more people attending and improve my comparing.

One of the limits put on this is the early start time, 7.30, which is almost set in concrete. Almost every one I approached said this made it difficult as by the time they’d got home from work fed the kids etc, it was too late to come, especially if you have to travel.

So there we have it, I grab at fame by becoming someone elses bitch, bow out or, possibly, find another pub that wants a pub quiz…

Only one More day to prepare…

Hopefully the thought of the small axe-monkey sneaking through your bedroom curtains has motivated many of you to attend the Cinque Ports pub quiz this Wednesday (quiz starts 7.30). For those who may be thinking of not coming may I introduce Monkeys girlfriend; “sinister doll in the shadows”, both are fresh back from their annual holidays with the Wicked Witch of the Norths flying monkeys and are looking for some fun.

So there you have it, quiz on Wednesday or sitting awake night after night waiting for the scratching sound on the windows, an easy decision I think!

Still smarting from being thrown out so many years agao.

Pub Quiz, the climb to fame re-commences!

Join the worlds humblest man in an evening of Pub Quiz delight, or, if you can’t find that come and be berated at the Cinque Port Arms, All Saints Street, Hastings Old Town (Click here for map) – the “fun” starts at 7.30pm. Spot the wrong answers, marvel at a badly worn bright shirt, gobble down the free sandwiches, heap ridicule on the pedants who take this all seriously, etc.

It’s a quid a person, all, sadly, going to charity and not my bank account.

For those of you thinking of not coming, just study the picture below and hope it’s not next to you in the morning (no threats or anything).

Worse than waking upwith me! nearly...

Where do you start?

One of the reasons I don’t “do” politics here usually is that it’s such a complex subject and as I get older I’m wary of the semantic straw men we use in place of thought, it also doesn’t get the laughs. I’m also leaning towards the opinion that any discussion deals mainly with the psychology of the participants and the shared pretence that “facts” are involved is moral cowardice. Surely the one thing the internet has shown us is that there is so much knowledge swilling around that anyone trumpeting their grasp of a situation is, er, a self deluded liar.

One other reason I have is that few people seem that interested and almost nobody is interested in solutions beyond bashing each other with their ignorant “pick and mix” tribal beliefs.

Fast becoming a core belief with me is the concept of “always being wrong”. I am. I have changed my mind over thing so many time throughout my life I am amazed that people can keep the same views for more than a few years, and they do. Why?

Then I realised, there are two reason to gain knowledge, 1: find out something new, 2: validate a held view.

This brings us back to all conversation being about personal psychology. The first reason requires confidence the second is an admission of fear.

I know which I prefer, and you?

One of these is a politician, clue: it’s not the one with a pocket watch.
